Mayor's Update on Municipal School District--April 2012
Posted on May 1st, 2012
April 13, 2012
Dear Fellow Collierville Citizen,
During the past two weeks there has been a lot of activity and news coverage concerning some legislation related to our efforts to create a municipal school district for Collierville. There are actually two separate pieces of legislation that address two separate issues. One bill we are following will in effect roll-back the date that municipalities can form municipal schools districts from August 2013 to January 2013. This specific piece of legislation is of interest to us because by January 2013 we hope to have a municipal school board elected and this would give them time to put staff and plans in place to open our school system in August of 2013.

The second bill, which has received much press during the past week, is a bill that will allow the municipalities to hold referendums this year on creating new municipal school districts. Each of these bills is working their way through the legislative process which we fully expected would not only take time but incur slight obstacles along the way. We fully anticipate that these important legislative bills will pass, but we also understand the legislators need to have ample time and information available to make an informed decision.

I have traveled to Nashville each of the past weeks to personally show my support to our legislators for their efforts and for the legislation that is a key to our ultimate success. In addition to having a presence in Nashville, I talk with our State Representatives and
State Senators on a regular basis several times a week. They have been very supportive of our efforts and I am very appreciative of their work.

While the work is taking place on the state legislative level, I along with Town staff members have been attending all of the Transition Planning Commission meetings and participating in the dialogue related to their work. I am also meeting and talking with my fellow municipal mayors on a regular basis to keep each other informed of developments as we each continue to move ahead with our respective plans to create school districts.

When we began the initiative to form a Collierville Municipal School District we knew it would be a lengthy and involved process. We have complete faith in our plan; we have a great team of consultants, advisors and legal counsel and most of all we believe that schools are the heart of our community and that students deserve to have the best quality education we can provide.

Again, I want to express my thanks to our legislators who are representing our interest and concerns with the highest levels of integrity and professionalism. I also want to thank all of the citizens who call and email me with their support and encouragement.

Sincerely,
Mayor Stan Joyner

New Resource for Parents at Collierville Burch Library

Collierville Burch Library Introduces New Resource for Parents

The Collierville Burch Library has just launched a new resource for Collierville parents called “Collierville Parents in the Know.” You will find it listed under the Resources tab on the Library’s website www.colliervillelibrary.org.

Collierville has many young families. In fact, according to the 2010 Census, almost 35% of the Collierville population is under 18 years of age. “Knowing this, I feel that there is a great need to help families navigate the community’s many resources related to services for young people and their parents,” said Library Director Deanna Britton. “Collierville Parents in the Know” gives contact information for local family dentists, pediatricians, babysitting services, children’s clothing, day care facilities, dance instruction, karate lessons, story times, summer camps, party places and much more to help parents find community resources.

All 115 unique businesses and services listed are either physically located in Collierville or are current members of the Chamber of Commerce. One parent who has commented to me about the site said, “She wished she had had this information when first moving to
Collierville!” “To help make the new resource even more useful and interactive, I would like parents to give us feedback so we can add it to the website,” said Deanna. What is your favorite parenting book, favorite local park, best parenting advice you ever received,
3 good tips for moms, etc.? If you would like to participate, please contact Claire Greer (Claire_collierville@yahoo.com).
